Antique “Margarita” Relicario or Reliquary Case in Base Metal in Silver Tone from Spain

An antique ornately framed relicario made of base metal in silver tone. This is not a pendant but a reliquary case with a holy relic of St. Margarita. It features gold thread, a red background with the name “Margarita” in the middle. The back part is made of newer paper. This is estimated to be from the 19th to early 20th century.

I was so excited when I saw this in a flea market in Seville, Spain. Before that, I’ve only seen relicarios like this in books. Portugal, Spain and their former colonies such as the Philippines valued these religious mementos as a form of protection or as a symbol of faith.

It has a bit of weight, with minor signs of wear on the glass but overall still in good condition.

Measurements:
Height: 2.70 inches
Width (widest part): 1.86 inches
Total Weight: 30.90g
