Antique Violin Vesta Match Case in Silver Plated Brass from Spain

An antique brass in silver tone violin match case that I got from a flea market in Seville, Spain. This match case, also known as “vesta”, were used to keep matches inside. Matches then were highly combustible and cases were made to keep them safe. This one is estimated to be from the 1900s at the height of their popularity.

The bottom part can be flipped open. It is ribbed so the match can be struck against it. There is a ring on top of the violin which may have been used to attach a watch chain. By the 1920s, cigarette lighters were made and these match vesta cases were no longer used. They evolved from everyday items to collectibles of a bygone era.
